Tim Sheridan, the leading Democratic candidate for Congress in California’s 42nd Congressional District, criticized Senate Republicans today for blocking two bills on Thursday designed to protect Americans from gun violence, including one that would have prevented individuals on the Federal terrorism watch list from buying firearms.
The National Rifle Association opposed both bills.
“One has to wonder what the National Rifle Association is thinking,” Sheridan noted. “The fact that it is blocking a bill designed to protect Americans from terrorists is unbelievable and, more importantly, unpatriotic.”
The first bill – introduced by Senator Diane Feinstein (D CA) – would have prohibited sales of firearms to individuals who are on the Federal terrorism watch list. Currently, individuals on the watch list cannot fly on commercial flights but are allowed to buy guns. In the end, all Republicans except one voted against the prohibition.
The Senate also failed to pass legislation that would have required universal background checks. A similar bill was first considered in April 2013 after the shooting deaths of 20 elementary school children and 6 adults in Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut In this case, all Senate Republicans except four voted against the bill.
The National Rifle Association, one of the most controversial lobbyist groups in DC, has extended its reach into California’s 42nd Congressional District as well. According to reports, (http://www.nracongress.com/all-nra-recipients.html) the NRA has contributed more than $50,000 to Congressman Ken Calvert over his 22 year Congressional career.
“In a recent interview, Mr. Calvert said that his first priority was to keep his constituents safe – a point to which I wholeheartedly support,” Sheridan said. “On the other hand, he has taken $50,000 from the NRA which supports allowing those on the terrorist watch list to buy guns while also opposing universal background checks. Ultimately, neither of these positions helps keep families in our community safe.”
“Mr. Calvert is, once again, putting personal gain and politics before constituent safety,” Sheridan added. “We can do better.”
California’s 42nd Congressional district, a geographical area shaped like the letter “X,” runs along the i_15 corridor from Eastvale, southeast to Temecula, and northeast along the I_215 and CA_79 corridors to Beaumont. It also includes the communities of Corona, Norco, Lake Elsinore, WIldomar, Murrieta, Menifee, Sun City, Winchester, Homeland and Nuevo. Mr. Sheridan lives in Lake Elsinore and was the 2014 Democratic nominee for Congress in the 42nd District.
