Tim Sheridan reinforced his commitment today to support the men and women serving in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.
The California Democratic Party’s candidate in the 42nd Congressional District said, unlike his opponent, he supports the troops.
“Washington insider and 23-year incumbent Congressman Ken Calvert likes to paint himself as pro-military but his track record demonstrates otherwise,” Sheridan said. “As is often the case, my opponent’s actions with respect to the military and veterans in California’s 42nd Congressional District are inconsistent with his words. The most prominent example is his introduction and support of the REDUCE Act which would have significantly weakened our military and our country.”
Mr. Calvert introduced the REDUCE Act in January 2015 in which he proposed to cut personnel in the Department of Defense.
“Fortunately, few in Congress took the REDUCE Act seriously and it never made it out of committee,” Sheridan noted. “But it clearly demonstrates that Mr. Calvert does not support the men and women in the military, and their families, who sacrifice everyday to keep our country safe. Simply put, Calvert is disrespecting our troops when he proposes to cut Pentagon civilian jobs.”
The REDUCE Act represents another milestone down Calvert’s long road of trying to diminish the effectiveness of the U.S. Department of Defense. Mr. Calvert voted for the Budget Control Act in 2011 which imposed mandatory budget cuts on
the Pentagon. The military’s service chiefs have said that these budget cuts are the biggest challenge to the military’s readiness. (http://www.defense.gov/News/ Article/Article/694480/sequestration-poses-biggest-threat-to-readiness-military- leaders-say)
“We need to increase pay of our service members and give them the tools they need to keep our nation safe,” Sheridan argued. “Mr. Calvert’s actions demonstrate that he is not supportive of this position.”
California’s 42nd Congressional District, a geographical area shaped like the letter “X.” runs along the I-15 corridor from Eastvale, southeast to Temecula, and northeast along the I-215 and CA-79 corridors to Beaumont. It also includes the communities of Corona, Norco, Lake Elsinore, Wildomar, Murrieta, Menifee, Sun City, Winchester, Homeland and Nuevo. Mr. Sheridan lives in Lake Elsinore.
