Sheridan Statement on Containing ISIS – December 14, 2015

December 14, 2015

Tim Sheridan, leading Democratic candidate for the 42nd Congressional district, issues the following statement on containing ISIS.

At this time when the United States is facing unpredictable threats from the terrorist group known as ISIS, it is incumbent upon both federal and state leaders to work together to protect the interests of the United States and our citizens both here and abroad.

We must work with global partners to blunt the operational capacity of ISIS through a range of directed measures. Choking off ISIS’ financial resources, targeting social media websites that spread ISIS recruiting efforts, and arriving at a strategy which includes all possible means to see
terrorism defeated are measures that must be enacted immediately.

Facing the threat of asymmetrical terrorism, particularly the threat posed by ISIS, must become a national issue for all the people of the United States. The volatility of this threat requires that a full-scale counter offensive be considered. If necessary, I would support a coordinated military
campaign shared with international partners, through the United Nations, so that our world is safe from the threat of dangerous and radicalized groups.

It is clear that this threat has taken advantage of the global reach of the Internet. Therefore, the fight against terrorism must be waged in cyberspace as well as on the conventional battlefield. Specifically, we must target social media platforms in order to stem to the flow of fighters who
are drawn to the false rhetoric that ISIS puts out on the Internet.

As the leading democracy in the world, I believe that our country must also lead the way in initiating dialogue with Muslim leaders around the world to provide a global platform against the false use of the religion of Islam by terrorist groups. While the way forward will not be easy, I have no doubt that the principles of freedom and democracy will overcome the rhetoric of hate and violence.

We must also ensure the safety of Americans in the United States and throughout the world. It is imperative that the President and Congress work in coordination with our military leaders and local officials to arrive at a coherent strategy to protect U.S citizens. However, we must not overreact by moving to unnecessarily and unwisely change current security and immigration policies just as a means of demonstrating that we are doing something. This is the time to put aside partisan politics to insure that our free and democratic society is not altered.

As Americans, we must come together to protect our way of life, not just for today but for future generations. The liberty and freedom that Americans enjoy is founded on a pluralistic society, religious freedom, and rule of law. It is important to preserve our American values while at the same time safeguarding the lives of all who call the United States home; regardless of race, religion, or ethnicity.

If we work together, and respect everyone who calls the United States their home, we will be able to vanquish the propaganda of terrorism.

To that end, and when I’m elected to Congress, I pledge to work with any politician regardless of their party affiliation, law enforcement, community and religious leaders to protect the freedom and safety of all Americans. When we come together as Americans, the freedom that binds us together will be the strength that defeats those who threaten our way of life.
