Tim Sheridan said today that the men and women serving in the U.S. armed forces deserve a pay increase.
The California Democratic Party’s candidate in the 42nd Congressional District cited a July 2016 Government Accountability Office report that shows active-duty service members spent more than $21 million in food stamps at military commissaries between September 2014 and August 2015.
“It is unconscionable that we have military personnel and their families on food stamps,” said Sheridan. “Our nation needs a strong military. It’s not just weapons that make us strong: it’s those who wear the uniform every day who keep us safe. We must recognize their worth and pay them properly.”
While the GAO report concluded the Pentagon does not have complete information on how many military families currently use food assistance, it did cite a Census Bureau survey that also reported 23,000 active-duty service members used food stamps in 2013.
“Our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines protect our freedom day after day,” Sheridan said. “They should not be having food insecurities or be on public assistance year after year. Congress should act immediately and increase our military’s pay,” he concluded.
