Tim Sheridan’s Statement On Rep. Calvert’s Refusal To Speak Out Against Donald Trump Regarding Mr. Trump’s Comments Against A Gold Star Mom and Dad – August 2, 2016
Khizr and Ghazla Khan are the parents of U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan who was killed in a suicide bombing in Iraq. Last week, Mr. & Ms. Khan appeared at the Democratic National Convention where Mr. Khan gave an impassioned speech in which he expressed disagreement with Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s policies – a time honored tradition at American political conventions.
However, unlike at other American political conventions, Mr. Trump lashed out at this American Gold Star mom and dad in a wholly inappropriate manner for the comments that they made.
While leading Republicans including Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senator John McCain, have spoken out against Mr. Trump’s comments, our Representative, 23-1/2 year incumbent Congressman Ken Calvert has remained silent.
Mr. Calvert’s shameful failure to speak out against the comments made against a Gold Star family is inexcusable. It continues a consistent pattern from Mr. Calvert of being out-of-touch with those in California’s 42nd District – an area of the country with many active military and retired veterans and their families.
I deplore Mr. Trump’s comments and call on him to apologize to Mr. & Ms. Khan. The courage that Mr. & Ms. Khan have shown in the face of an unbelievable tragedy is inspiring. I thank them and all Gold Star families for their sacrifice.
California’s 42nd Congressional District, a geographical area shaped like the letter “X”, runs along the I-15 corridor from Eastvale, southeast to Temecula, and northeast along the I-215 and CA-79 corridors to Beaumont. It also includes the communities of Corona, Norco, Lake Elsinore, Wildomar, Murrieta, Menifee, Sun City, Winchester, Homeland, Nuevo and parts of Temecula. Mr. Sheridan lives in Lake Elsinore.
